Haara was forced into prostitution by her own mother. Her mother, whose first husband had died of cardiac arrest due to financial strain, remarried and older man whilst also pursuing an illegal relationship with another. For two years, Haara’s mother would bring her to different men to sell her body. One day, a neighbour saw her taking Haara away and informed her grandmother who reported it to the police. The police managed to get Haara to the Child Welfare Committee who in turn sent her to us. She arrived in NHH on January 8th 2020 aged fourteen.
Initially, she was depressed, apathetic, detached from the staff’s attempts to reach her and isolated herself from the others girls. Day by day however, as she began to engage with our aftercare program she slowly came out of the dark depression that hung over her. She remembered what it was like to feel positive, and she began to mingle with the other girls. Her apathy was replaced by an interest in learning and she sat her Junior classes. After a few months she advanced to 10th grade and started more advanced subjects including computers and IT. She succeeded in passing her final exams. This year, she joined the CSE group (computer training course). She is showing great perseverance and commitment to her studies, attending college regularly. She is not only determined to do well herself, but tried to give back and help the other girls in her class, explaining and answering their questions whenever she can. She is happy here at NHH and very grateful for the opportunity to get a Junior Collg education.
We love seeing how Haara is progressing on her journey of restoration and can’t wait to see what she chooses to study at university!
