Tiya joined us at New Horizons House in June 2023 aged 16. Tiya lost both her parents in a car crash and her three elder sisters to suicide before the age of five. Her aunt sent her to live in an ashram where sadly things got even worse for her. She was severely underfed, overworked, and subjected to sexual abuse at the hands of the religious leaders there who took advantage of their positions of power. With the help of a maid who worked there, she managed to escape with enough money to board a train and return to her aunt. Together, they went to the police who took action by seizing the ashram, charging the criminals within, and sending all the children to better homes. Tiya was sent to us at NHH, where she has been partaking in our aftercare program. She is working hard in school and hopes to become a teacher one day!
