Gamya's Story

Gamya’s early life was marked by tragedy and hardship. Her parents, who both suffering from alcohol addiction, passed away and left her to navigate the world alone.

She attended a government school from 1st-5th grade, but circumstances forced her to drop out. With no one to care for her, she found herself working as a daily laborer in the fields, picking peppers and cotton. In her desperate situation, she resorted to begging on the streets, using whatever money she could gather to buy food. With no home to return to, she often slept on the steps of a temple, seeking refuge in the only place that felt somewhat safe.

Her uncle preyed on her vulnerability. He began to sexually abuse her, exploiting her innocence and desperation. In a shocking betrayal, he even sold her own brother to facilitate her exploitation, receiving a mere 5,000 rupees in return. He then established a disturbing business at temples and bus stops, providing medication for abortions and contraception, all while forcing Gamya into a life of prostitution.

During the night, he would take her to tents where she was coerced into selling her body, while during the day, she worked in local shops, trapped in a cycle of abuse and exploitation. One fateful day, while wandering around the temple, Gamya caught the attention of Child Line staff. Recognizing the signs of her distress, they intervened and brought her to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). She was transferred to us at New Horizons in 2024, where she finally found a glimmer of hope and the possibility of a new beginning.

Gamya dreams of becoming a fashion designer and is eager to begin her journey learning sewing here at NHH.
