Hello Dear Friends & Supporters,
The news from India this month is the hot weather and expansion plans for the Transition Home. The Transition Home is for 18- to 21-year-old “graduates” from the Safe House who have studied diligently and are pursuing advanced education in business or have been admitted to Browning Junior College…degree programs such as nursing, medical technician, or teacher are frequent choices. These young women also continue to learn life skills…shopping, budgeting, use of public transportation, safety and security, job seeking, etc.
The good news is that land for the new Transition Home was purchased after our spring fundraiser and is located a short (safe) walk from both Browning Junior College and the home of our operations director, Esther Medidi. An architect is currently working on design of the new Transition Home. It is being sized to accommodate up to 50 young women. Construction is expected to start later this year and be completed by October of next year…in time to accept graduates from the Safe House.
FYI, New Horizons operates on a cash basis with no debt and we are currently raising money for this new construction. Our spring fund raiser last month permitted purchase of the land and set funds aside for operational costs. If you are able to help with the projected cost of construction (approximately $225,000) a check mailed to New Horizons House, P. O. Box 620083, Littleton, CO 80162 is the most cost-effective way to contribute.
The temperature in Bhimavaram has been exceeding 100 degrees with 70+% relative humidity for several days in a row and is forecast to hit a high of 121 next week…wow!! It is a few degrees cooler at the Safe House, located in a Mango grove outside of town. Both of the New Horizons facilities have air conditioned classrooms and a common area for cooling off, which girls enjoy at the peak of the afternoon heat. After sunset it cools off with nighttime temperatures between 75 – 80 recently. While the bedrooms are not air conditioned, they do have fans and ventilation. The following is a typical bedroom note the high ceilings, upper vents, and installed fans.
Thank you for your on-going interest and life changing support of these young survivors of human trafficking.
– Mike Graves, for the board and especially the girls.
