“Hope locates itself in the premise that we don’t know what will happen and that in the spaciousness of uncertainty there is room to act. When you recognize uncertainty, you recognize that you may be able to influence the outcomes – you alone or you in concert with a few dozen or several million others. Hope is an alternative to the certainty of both optimists and pessimists: Optimists think it will all be fine without our involvement; pessimists adopt the opposite position. Both excuse themselves from acting. It is the belief that what we do matters even though how and when it may matter, who and what it may impact, are not things we can know beforehand. To hope is to give yourself to the future.”
This past month our Program Director in India sent me this picture of our Transition House (TH) girls in front of the new dormitory we are constructing for them. For the past 5 years, our TH girls have been housed in a rented facility which we have now outgrown. These girls are all graduates from our residential aftercare facility and have made the choice to stay at New Horizons to pursue a university degree and/or enroll in our Entrepreneurial Business Training program. The smiles come from a future they are imagining; a future characterized by hope.
If you are currently partnering with us, thank you.
If you have not yet decided to partner with us, I’ll leave you with this thought from Terry Tempest Williams: “there is something deeper than hope…. which is engagement.” As New Horizons continues to grow and flourish, will you take the next step and join our community of monthly supporters?
On behalf of the girls,
Jonathan Spencer
President and Founder
P.S. Speaking of engagement, please join us for our annual spring fundraiser, An Evening Under the Mango Trees, which will be held in Denver on Thursday, April 30 from 5:30 – 9:00 pm. The event has sold out each of the past 3 years so get your tickets now at www.newhorizonshouse.org.
