IMPORTANT: COVID-19 Report from India
Here is the latest update from New Horizons House in India:
The good news is that our girls, staff and Administrators are all healthy and safe. However, the situation in the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh has been deteriorating. Reports indicate that approximately 60% of India’s population is taking the curfew seriously but 40% is not. Consequently, this will likely result in a surge of COVID-19 cases over the next month. There is now a government-imposed lockdown, which has closed all businesses in the area around New Horizons House, including the majority of grocery stores and banks. A few government food shops remain open and our Program Director reports that he is still able to access the bank account holding our construction funds which he has been using to purchase food for the girls. They have approximately one month’s worth of food at the home and are supplementing that with eggs and vegetables being produced on the property.
Police checkpoints have limited anyone’s ability to access the compound, so it is relatively safe. However, the lockdown also means that the majority of our staff and teachers are unable to travel to the compound. The limited staff that remain are doing well both physically and emotionally during this challenging time. The biggest issue they face is trying to keep all 38 girls productively occupied during the day! Recently the girls have been helping make masks which are being distributed to three local villages. In addition, per a government mandate, New Horizons House has been helping provide vegetables, cooking oil and soap to a few nearby villages.
Although our Administrator has not been able to visit for several weeks, she has been conducting daily video chats with the girls and anticipates being able to make a trip to the compound this coming week.
As expected, we have seen a huge drop in donations. Consequently, we have suspended all capital construction projects as of March 16 until we see how the situation develops.
Please keep the safety of the girls and staff in your prayers, along with patience and strength for the limited staff who remain at the home. We are grateful for your continued prayers and thank you in advance for whatever financial support you can provide in these difficult times!
We currently have 38 girls at New Horizons with hope for the future. Please consider making a recurring monthly investment at www.newhorizonshouse.org and let others know about the incredible opportunity we have to make a difference.
