Dear Friend,

My name is Tim Hillmer and I’m a writer, educator, and father who strongly supports the work of New Horizons House and the profound impact it will make on the lives of young women in India. One reason I’m involved is my belief that our actions as women and men of faith can truly change lives through what we say and what we support. In my own experience as a writer, I’ve witnessed the effect that a single article or story can have when addressing an issue of social justice and attempting to educate readers about a topic they previously knew little about.

Patricia McCormick is an author and educator I’ve long admired whose work makes a difference in our world. An award winning writer and journalist, Patricia recently interviewed Malala Yousafzai, the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize winner from Pakistan. The result was I AM MALALA, the true story of how one young woman took a stand against the Taliban and became an international symbol of peaceful protest.

I believe Patricia’s most powerful work, however, is her novel, SOLD, which tells the unforgettable story of Lakshmi, an extraordinary thirteen year old girl who risks everything for freedom after being trafficked from her mountain village in Nepal to a prison brothel in India.  SOLD was recently adapted into a powerful film produced by the Academy Award winning actress and writer, Emma Thompson. After listening to Patricia describe a trip to India where she interviewed first-hand girls involved in the sex trade, I knew I had to get involved and am asking you to take action as well.

First, I would encourage you read the book or see the movie in order to develop a deeper understanding of the mission of New Horizons House. Second, please join me in supporting the work that New Horizons is doing.  They are currently in the midst of their 2017 capital campaign to finish construction of a dormitory which will provide an education, housing, medical care, trauma counseling and vocational training for up to 20 girls at their residential facility in Andhra Pradesh.  You can make a difference by partnering with us.

Thank you,

Timothy Hillmer, Louisville, Colorado
