He was married to her…my big sister, that is. Not that she had much choice in the matter. Us girls often don’t. Anyway, I went to live with them after my dad killed himself. I think he just didn’t want to live anymore without my mom. She died from AIDS. That’s pretty common around here.

I used to have three sisters, but not anymore. My parents loved alcohol more than they loved us, and Papa sold my two older sisters so that he could get more money to buy cheap liquor for him and Mama. My older sisters were harassed sexually by the mean people Papa sold them too.

There were three of us girls, and at 16, I was the youngest. Ma is dead, and Da remarried, so mostly we just took care of ourselves. Eventually, both of my sisters got married and then I was really on my own. I stopped going to school and just stayed home. I didn’t know what else to do.

My favorite part about New Horizons House is that I get to have so many friends. I was an only child, so I spent a lot of time playing by myself when I was growing up and I always wished I had other girls around, especially after Mother died.

When father found out that Mother was working as a prostitute, he just left. One day he was there, and the next day he was gone. Now he has a new family and he doesn’t think of us anymore. For a while, it was just my brothers and my mother and me. But Mother was gone a lot.

After my parents got divorced, me and two of my sisters moved with our Mama to Chinthalapudi. My other sister had some psychological problems, so she stayed with our Papa…for a while, anyway. I guess she ran away from him eventually.
